Each month, Rated lists our favourites: the must-sees, must-be-seen-ats, have-you-reads, ins and outs, and up and downs for your diaries.
While our friends across the Atlantic have finished sweeping up ticker tape and removing glitter from almost every crevice as US Pride month draws to a close, over here, we’re just warming up. Thanks to NYC World Pride for such an amazing commemoration of the half-century since the Stonewall uprising, as well as the NYC Reclaim Queer Pride March who reminded the world of the radical focus on a different, fairer future that queer politics and activism have created. Thanks especially for placing trans women of colour at the forefront of the party, like they were at the forefront of the rebellion that emboldened a movement for queer rights, and to this day remain at the forefront of violence, rejection and exclusion. The World Pride committee also had the good sense to invite our ‘local girl turned good’, Lady Phyll of UK Black Pride and Kaleidoscope Trust to be Grand Marshal with the cast of the phenomenal, breakthrough drama, Pose. We always knew Lady Phyll deswas worthy of a global stage; it suited her. Our favourite picture from the parade though, was by the group from Rainbow Noir – a long way from Canal Street.

As London gears up to welcome Pose star, and man-in-a-dress of the moment, Billy Porter, for its own Pride March, and UK Black Pride moves to its new larger East London location, we list some highlights among the many events and happenings being created by and for queer people of colour in London, and around the UK

Robert Taylor’s charm-powered response to the ‘Chosen Families’ theme of the Levi’s/Queer Britain pop up museum this week lifted our spirits. It came and went quickly. Looking forward to this exhibition and to more imaginative Queer Britain link-ups like this popping up in the future

Watch Rev Jide Macaulay as he challenges the Church of England to live up to its mission – and become a church that is truly inclusive of all God’s children. Jide has made both the theological study and ministry to LGBTQ people a core part of his vocation, so this should be required watching for all those of Christian faith.
