Pearl Alcock’s Brixton shebeen became a haven for London’s Black queer men during the 1970s. It was closed in 1981 as a result of the uprisings – never to be replaced and too quickly forgotten. 40 years later, we are celebrating the Black queer presence at the heart of Britain’s Black communities. We’re filling in the gap by collating a mixtape with a song for each year since 1981 that filled dancefloors on London’s Black queer scene. ‘Mixtape Stories’ hears directly from community members about the tunes that they remember, and the memories they evoke.

Here in Part One – Young Lloyd of the Black Experience reflects on the 1990s
