2018 is boom time for podcasts – listening hours have surpassed talk radio for the first time as lower barriers to entry mean listeners can find an ever more diverse range of voices. As ever, Black queer men in the UK are ahead of the curve. This month, we’ll be introducing you to some of our favourites
basicbiscuits

Who are you?

Carina: I live in East London and I always have an opinion about most things happening in the world. I’m super sarcastic and very bubbly. Think of me as a dry prosecco!

Josh: I’m from South London and I like to believe that I’m very opinionated, which can be tricky at times, as I need to learn to have a filter. I like to call myself The Melanin King!

Why make Basic Biscuits?

Carina: Both me and Josh have opinions about things happening in the world, him more so about the entertainment world than me and me more so about the news. Also, so many of our peers share our thoughts and shady remarks so we wanted to bring it together and make it light and entertaining. Plus it’s always nice to know you’re not the only one in the world who had that same thought about something!

JoshBasic Biscuits is more than just a podcast for us. It’s a way of life. Especially growing up on the LGBT scene and growing up in poverty stricken areas. It’s about knowing who you are, being comfortable at whatever age and knowing that it doesn’t matter if you don’t have all your shit together. We are all in this together and I think the media plays a lot on young people’s minds, they say that we should have a house/kids and a marriage by the age of 25 and if not, then you’re the worst person in the world.

What have you learned in the process?

Carina: I’ve learned that I need to learn how to edit lol

Josh: That men are trash! Also I’ve learned how to take feedback and turn negatives into positives.

Why should BlackOutUK readers listen in?

Carina: Because if I do say so myself, we’re quite funny together. It will also give listeners a chance to learn what’s going on in the world without having to watch the news or read the paper, but it’s also light-hearted and funny so it keeps them entertained and interested.

Josh: For 30 mins to 45 mins you get to laugh and relax. You’ll realise that you’re not the only one that thinks this world is fucked up AND WE ARE HERE TO TELL Y’ALL!!!

What’s next?

Carina + Josh: Well we’ve just introduced “Basic Biscuits – Mini Bites” which is a shorter interview that we do with people we feel are influential and/or inspiring. We’re really excited about it, we’ve done our first interview and we had such a great time recording it. I’m excited to meet and talk to all the amazing people we’ll have on.

3 other podcasts that you love?

Carina: I’ve listened to Melanin Millennials which is really good. I want to start listening to one called Forensic Files, as I have a passion for Forensics and lastly I would recommend Wolves in the City, I really love their name, I want to be a wolf!

Josh: Wolves in the City, The Read and Another Round.

Favourite quote from your podcast so far?

Carina: Ah I don’t have one! We come up with the silliest things to say every week that has me throwing back my head in laughter, but I haven’t saved any in my head for a rainy day. I do love the title for Josh’s segment though – ‘Something in the milk ain’t clean!

Josh: I literally say the most random shit ever so it’s pretty hard, but my favourite quote would have to be exposing Wendy Williams’ real name and saying she is shaped like the back of my couch!
