2018 is boom time for podcasts – listening hours have surpassed talk radio for the first time as lower barriers to entry mean listeners can find an ever more diverse range of voices. As ever, Black queer men in the UK are ahead of the curve. This month, we’ll be introducing you to some of our favourites
Who are you?
My name is Josh Rivers. I’m a gay Black man, writer and podcaster, with a capacious interest in culture and an unyielding passion for amplifying the voices, talent and lived experiences of the queer Black community.
Why make ‘Busy Being Black’?
Busy Being Black is ultimately a healing project. In the tumult that is life, I’ve been having these mind-bending and life-giving conversations with other Black folk, and have found the transfer of knowledge and sharing of experience to be so immeasurably helpful as I navigate through the world. Busy Being Black is one of the ways I want to give back to the queer Black community and to say thank you for the support and encouragement. I created the Busy Being Black Statement of Intent as the first episode so people could understand better what I’m trying to achieve.
What have you learned in the process?
I’ve learned that we’re all figuring it out. No one I’ve spoken to has arrived, as it were. And I’ve learned of the generosity of spirit of our community.
