Black Gay Ink is back!

Following on from last October’s Black History Month event, Black Gay Ink 2 brings together emerging and established writers to share their work with each other and you. Brought to you by Ehtamard, prose, drama, poetry and music on the theme of ‘Love and Relationships’ combine to make Black Gay Ink a celebration of our voices and a space for free expression.

Here’s what happened. . .

A school night in Brixton, and the crowd (old faces and new faces, gay and straight, black and white) turn out for Black Gay Ink’s LGBT Month event

It was actually the writers group’s birthday, having had their first meeting in LGBT History Month in 2017. The group was set up to provide a safe space where black gay men could express themselves through writing. Where they could also meet to discuss and debate their issues and interests

I am a great believer in the healing power of writing. Used creatively, writing can help people make sense of who they are, and their place in society. This can be empowering if the society in which you live doesn’t fully recognise you, value you or worse still, is hostile towards you.

At our event for Black History Month, in 2017 the group presented poetry and prose. This year they challenged themselves by writing theatre pieces. With a nod to Valentine’s day, the pieces were all loosely based around the theme of black gay love, and relationships. The writers tackled many themes ranging from ‘being in the closet’, ‘open relationships’, ‘app dating’, and ‘unrequited love’ to name a few.

The evening was complemented by ‘words of wisdom from guest speaker Dennis Carney, and music written specially for the event by music sensation LovePeaceX. Bar a few technical hitches a good time was had by all.

Plans are already under way for Black Gay Ink 3
