We’re massive fans of James Baldwin so are massively excited to announce a special preview screening of new documentary ‘I’m Not Your Negro‘ on Sunday 19th March.
BlkoutUK presents a preview screening of Raoul Peck’s Oscar-nominated documentary film ‘I’m Not Your Negro’, based on James Baldwin’s unfinished manuscript Remember This House. With unprecedented access to Baldwin’s archives, the film links Baldwin’s insights to Black Lives Matter, and the current struggles for racial justice in the US and beyond. Writing as a gay black man, Baldwin is regarded by many as ahead of his time, pioneering in his commentary on contemporary issues, including those of intersectionality.
Despite widespread critical acclaim, black queer writers such as Preston Mitchum have raised concerns about the near erasure of Baldwin’s sexuality from the documentary. We want to use this screening as the start of a series of events to celebrate James Baldwin’s legacy for us and to ask broader questions about black queer, anti-racist activism. Watch this space for further announcements – #ReclaimingJimmy
On Sun 19th March, there will be a post-screening discussion between scholars, activists and creatives on Baldwin’s inspiration and the impact of black queer voices in the struggle for racial justice.
