We are so excited to be working with our friends at the ICA and Doc Society to welcome film-maker, Yance Ford, to London for a special screening of his Oscar-nominated documentary ‘Strong Island’ on Tues 13th Feb at 6.15.
“Strong Island chronicles the arc of a family across history and geography, from the racial segregation of the Jim Crow South to the promise of New York City; from the presumed safety of middle class suburbs to the maelstrom of an unexpected and violent death. A deeply intimate and meditative film from director Yance Ford, Strong Island reflexively asks what one can do when grief is entwined with historical injustice, and how one grapples with the complicity of silence endemic within a nation with a false sense of justice.
Strong Island suggests ways in which activism enters a personal, intimate sphere, without compromising the impact of social and political critique, through film as a medium and the cinema as a forum.”
BlackOutUK is here to celebrate #BlackExcellence and this one-off opportunity to hear from accomplished director Yance Ford is not to be missed. While we know all about the many talents among black queer people, the success of Moonlight at last year’s Academy Awards was acknowledgement of some of this talent on the world stage, wouldn’t it be great for this to be the start of a new normal.
